News items from Traverse City Area Public Schools

School social workers from Traverse City Area Public Schools school social workers will host the 15th Annual TCAPS Peacemaker Day Rally on Thursday, May 24th, from 9:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Traverse City Central High School. This year over 300 Peacemakers from Central Grade School, TCAPS Montessori at Glenn Loomis, Traverse Heights, Courtade, Cherry Knoll and Eastern Elementary Schools will take part in the rally along with over 100 students from TC Central High School who will provide leadership for the Peacemaker groups. Many of the high school students were Peacemakers when they attended elementary school.

On Thursday, May 24th, at 7:00 p.m., Traverse City Music Boosters will host a Benefit Concert at TC West Senior High School. The event is open to the public. All families and community members who have a student involved in any TCAPS Music Program, grades K-12, are invited and encouraged to attend.

On Wednesday, May 23rd, at 7:00 p.m., the TC Central High School Advanced Theatre class will present two mini-productions, Rapunzel Uncut and Miss Polly’s Institute for Criminally Damaged Young Ladies Puts on a Show. The plays will be performed by twenty-five 9th-12th grade students who will take the stage in the TC Central High School Auditorium, 1150 Milliken Drive.

Traverse City Area Public Schools is proud to announce the Traverse City West Senior High School ninth grade students who placed in the top nine for their grade level in the Medical Alliance Essay Contest. The top three winners in the contest, along with their teachers will be honored at a luncheon award ceremony sponsored by Munson Medical Center Medical Alliance on Wednesday, May 23rd, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Munson Medical Center, 550 Munson Avenue.

On Wednesday, May 23rd, TCAPS Montessori at Glenn Loomis students will have the opportunity to take part in Building Bridges with Music workshops hosted by music composer Jeff Haas. The workshops will focus on utilizing the engaging and universal language of music to inspire interactive discussions. Students will learn about overcoming barriers that exist between people as well as how to encourage acceptance and peace. Building Bridges with Music features live music and discussion with the Jeff Haas Ensemble.

For the second consecutive year, TC West Middle School students are participating in ‘Project Greenager’, a community service project. Tomorrow, Thursday, May 17th, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., TC West Middle School 8th grade students will be working with representatives and volunteers from American Waste, Team Elmer’s, and Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation (TART) Trails to remove railroad ties in the wetland area between Carter and Grandview Roads, Traverse City.

On Saturday, August 4th, athletic sports physicals will be offered to all TCAPS students who plan to try out for athletic teams at the middle school or high school level for the 2012 – 2013 school year. Physicals will take place at Traverse City East Middle School, 1776 Three Mile Road from 8:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Cost is $25.00 per athlete. Please make checks payable to TCAPS. Scholarships are available by contacting TCAPS Nursing Department at (231) 933-5610.

Traverse City Area Public Schools is pleased to announce the Board of Education’s Retirement Recognition Celebration honoring all 2011/12 retiring employees of Traverse City Area Public Schools (a list of 2011-2012 District Retirees is attached). The celebration will be held on Thursday, May 31st, at 4:30 p.m. at the Tompkins Boardman Administration Center, 412 Webster Street. The event will be held on the second floor in the Curriculum Rooms where refreshments will be served. Mr. John Sonnemann, ‘Voice of the Trojans’, will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Special entertainment will be provided by TCAPS Music Department.

Beginning Thursday, May 17th, through Saturday, May 19th, TC Central High School Choirs will perform “Rendezvous at the Jazz Club.” This high-energy performance of popular music will showcase jazz, pop, rock, and country tunes. All performances will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the TC Central High School Auditorium, 1150 Milliken Drive.

On Tuesday, May 15th, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Interlochen Community School will host a Big Box of Books Event, sponsored by ReadAloud.org. All participating students receive a box of five, age-appropriate books to take home and share with their family.

Traverse City Area Public Schools salutes the accomplishments of all area educators who were recently honored as a 2012 Outstanding Educator of the Year. Three Traverse City Area Public Schools employees were among the honorees to receive this prestigious award. These educators will be honored at the annual awards ceremony held on Wednesday, May 30th, at the City Opera House. A reception will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with the awards ceremony beginning at 7:00 p.m.

On Wednesday, May 16th, students and staff from Eastern Elementary School’s Heroes In Our Community Project will celebrate this year’s Heroes accomplishments with a presentation to the community and organizations that Heroes supports. Heroes In Our Community is an initiative that has brought students, teachers, staff, and parents together to learn about civic responsibility, take social action, and make a difference in the Traverse City community, and around the world. On Saturday, May 19th, Blair Elementary School will host a 5K run/walk sponsored by the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan’s (BCBSM) Social Mission Grant. The grant promotes healthy lifestyles through physical fitness and helping children to learn healthy choices. Blair Elementary School families and community members are invited to take part in this event that will begin at 9:00 a.m. at Blair Elementary School, 1625 Sawyer Road.
