On Friday, October 3rd and Saturday, October 4th, Traverse City Area Public Schools will host “Purple Community” events to benefit the Van Andel Institute’s research to fight cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, like Parkinson’s.

Traverse City Area Public Schools will hold its annual fall Count Day on Wednesday, October 1, 2014. Schools receive funding based on the student attendance numbers taken on Count Day. Being in class, when possible, on Count Day helps TCAPS continue to provide the areas widest variety of high quality academic, athletic and arts programs.

On October 3, 2014, eight local manufacturers will open their doors to 250 area high school students for the area’s first Manufacturing Day. Manufacturing Day is an annual national event designed to showcase the career opportunities offered by modern manufacturing technology.

The National Writers Series and Front Street Writers program announce fall and winter writing workshops for students. Writing workshops are available for elementary, middle and high school students and include a high school workshop on writing essays for college and scholarships, a middle school workshop offered in October that focuses on telling “terrifying tales,” and an elementary school workshop where students can create their own book. On Saturday, October 25, 2014, Traverse City East Middle School will host the 23rd annual East Extravaganza Craft Show from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (1776 Three Mile Road). The event will include food, arts and crafts, a silent action and a book sale. All proceeds will benefit the East Middle School library. On Tuesday, October 28, 2014, the Traverse City Central High School Orchestra will perform the original “Carnival of the Animals” by Camille Saint-Saens. Senior pianists Colin Huls and Nick Suminski will be featured. The performance will take place at 7:00 p.m. in CHS Auditorium. The concert is free of charge, however, donations are welcome.

TCAPS will hold a sale of obsolete furniture and equipment on Friday, September 26th, at the TCAPS Maintenance Warehouse (1180 Cass Road). Items for sale include office furniture, kitchen equipment, classroom desks, pianos and much more. The sale is open to the public.

On Saturday, September 6, 2014, the Traverse City Music Boosters will hold their annual used instrument sale at Traverse City West Middle School from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Instrument donations can be dropped off at the school from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on the day of the sale. A portion of the proceeds will be used to fund classroom mini-grants and scholarships for TCAPS music students.

The Starfish Circus will be returning to Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) and to West Senior High School for the third time this fall. It is an artist-in-residence program that draws on the talents of four professional Michigan artists and more than 80 TCAPS students ranging from kindergarteners to high school seniors.

Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) has received final approval from the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) for its Early College program.

“We are excited to be able to offer this tuition-free program to our students in partnership with NMC,” said Paul Soma, interim superintendent of Traverse City Area Public Schools. “This is great news for our community because we are creating affordable ways for high school students to earn college credits and even an associate degree.”

Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) announces that Traverse Heights Elementary School will receive a $12,650 grant under the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) for the 2014/15 school year. The grant provides students with free, healthy snacks during the school day, consisting of either a fresh fruit or vegetable. TCAPS gives preference to locally sourced produce for the program.
