News items from Traverse City Area Public Schools

Traverse City Area Public Schools will host a hiring fair for jobs including preschool and extended day care staff, bus drivers, mechanics, guest teachers, food service workers and custodians. The hiring fair will take place on Thursday, October 30th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Friday, October 31st from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Interested applicants should apply in person at the Tompkins Boardman Administration Building (412 Webster St.).

Eastern Elementary School is partnering with the Traverse City Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) post to help deliver care packages to United States troops serving oversees. Students and families wishing to participate in the 6th annual “Trick or Treat for Troops” can donate non-chocolate Halloween candy, personal care items and handmade notes and cards. The care packages are expected to be delivered in time for the holidays. Eastern Elementary School will host an assembly on November 6, 2014 at 9:10 a.m. to reveal the total amount collected for this year’s “Trick or Treat for Troops” (1600 Eastern Ave.). The donations will then be presented to representatives from the VFW.

On Thursday, November 6, 2014, TCAPS Montessori at Glenn Loomis will host its first annual TCAPS Montessori Carnival and Craft Bazaar from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (1009 Oak St.). The event will feature carnival games, food, local, handmade goods and crafts, and a silent auction. More information is available at: www.tcapsmontessoripto.com.

Traverse City West Senior High School will host its 6th annual Art and Craft Show on November 15th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (5376 N. Long Lake Rd.). More than 60 vendors will participate. The event also includes a used book sale. Applications for vendors are still available at www.tcaps.net/wsh.

Traverse City West Senior High School student, Charles Rogers, earned the highest possible score of 36 on the ACT. The ACT is designed to provide colleges with evidence of a student’s readiness for the academic rigors of higher education.

Traverse City West Senior High School students Daniel Hansen, Hayden Northrup and Charles Rogers have been named Commended Students in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2015 competition by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Qualifying Test.

Traverse City Central High School will host College Application Week as part of the Michigan College Access Network’s Michigan College Application Week. The goal is to provide every graduating high school senior the opportunity to apply to college, with a particular focus on helping first-generation college students, low-income students and students who may not otherwise apply to college. One-on-one support will be provided by volunteers, including high school staff, registrars, post-secondary admissions officers and representatives from the community, to help students fill out applications at school.

On Friday, October 24, 2014, Central Grade School will host its first Chrysler Drive for Kids event from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Parents and community members are invited to test drive a new car free of charge. Each test drive earns $10 for Central Grade School. Anyone interested in test driving a new car must present a valid driver’s license.

On Saturday, October 25, 2014, Traverse City East Middle School will host the 23rd annual East Extravaganza Craft Show from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. The event will include food, arts and crafts, a silent action and a book sale. There will also be a blood drive from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the East Middle School library.

There will be a half day of school for students on Thursday, October 30, 2014, and no school for students on Friday, October 31, 2014, for scheduled teacher work days. On November 3, 2014, there is no school for students due to scheduled professional development for staff.

On October 24, 2014, Willow Hill Elementary School is hosting “The Great Pumpkin Lighting” from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. The school will decorate Ashton Park woods (on Hill Street) with homemade jack-o-lanterns and will light them with fire-less candles and lights. Families and the community are invited to walk through the park to see the students’ creations. Donations of canned goods, boxed goods, diapers or personal hygiene items will be accepted to benefit Traverse City High School.

On Tuesday, October 28, 2014, the Traverse City Central High School Orchestra will perform the original “Carnival of the Animals” by Camille Saint-Saens. Senior pianists Colin Huls and Nick Suminski will be featured. The performance will take place at 7:00 p.m. in CHS Auditorium. The concert is free of charge, however, donations are welcome.

Today, Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) held its fall 2014 “Count Day,” a district-wide student count to determine enrollment numbers. 90% of the funding the district receives is dependent on fall 2014 “Count Day” numbers and 10% on the count that will take place in February 2015.

On Friday, October 3rd and Saturday, October 4th, Traverse City Area Public Schools will host “Purple Community” events to benefit the Van Andel Institute’s research to fight cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, like Parkinson’s.

Traverse City Area Public Schools will hold its annual fall Count Day on Wednesday, October 1, 2014. Schools receive funding based on the student attendance numbers taken on Count Day. Being in class, when possible, on Count Day helps TCAPS continue to provide the areas widest variety of high quality academic, athletic and arts programs.

On October 3, 2014, eight local manufacturers will open their doors to 250 area high school students for the area’s first Manufacturing Day. Manufacturing Day is an annual national event designed to showcase the career opportunities offered by modern manufacturing technology.
