Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) has received final approval from the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) for its Early College program.

“We are excited to be able to offer this tuition-free program to our students in partnership with NMC,” said Paul Soma, interim superintendent of Traverse City Area Public Schools. “This is great news for our community because we are creating affordable ways for high school students to earn college credits and even an associate degree.”

Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) announces that Traverse Heights Elementary School will receive a $12,650 grant under the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) for the 2014/15 school year. The grant provides students with free, healthy snacks during the school day, consisting of either a fresh fruit or vegetable. TCAPS gives preference to locally sourced produce for the program.

Traverse City West Senior High School took top honors in the Big North Conference All-Sports Standings for the 2013-14 school year, earning 104 points and this year’s trophy. The award is given to the school that accumulates the most points through the course of the school year in conference sponsored events. Traverse City Central High School took second place with 93 points.

The TCAPS Art Department is proud to announce the 2nd annual Lease-A-Pisa Art program. TCAPS 4th graders created art pieces for local business and organizations to lease and display for one year. The minimum donation is $100 for one piece or $150 for two pieces, which will go toward the cost of professionally framing the artwork. Any additional proceeds will go to benefit the TCAPS Art Department. On Saturday, August 2, 2014, athletic sports physicals will be offered to all area students who plan to try out for sports teams at the middle school or high school level for the 2014/15 school year. Physicals are required for any TCAPS student wanting to participate in athletics in grades 6-12. Physicals must be dated on or after April 15, 2014 to be effective for the 2014/15 school year. Physicals will take place at East Middle School (1776 Three Mile Rd.) from 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. The cost is $25 per athlete. Physical forms are available at all TCAPS schools. Forms will also be available at the event. Physical forms must be signed by both a parent/guardian and the student in order for the physical to be performed. Students are encouraged not to drink caffeine prior to the physical.

On Wednesday, June 4th, Willow Hill students, staff and parents will participate in “Ride Your Bike to School Day”. Participants will meet at Darrow Park on Bay Street at 8:15 a.m. and ride together to Willow Hill Elementary School (1250 Hill Street). The event will be cancelled if it rains. Students should wear a helmet and be accompanied by an adult.

On Monday, June 9, 2014, 5th graders from Courtade Elementary School will hold a “wax museum” presentation (1111 Rasho Rd.). Students will dress in character and share information about a famous person they chose to research. Student presentations will include information about the person’s life, a timeline of events, an opinion about the person’s success and photos/illustrations. The event will be held from 9:30 a.m. -12:20 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. The event is open to parents and the public. All visitors must sign in at the front office.

Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) has selected new leaders for Central Grade School, Eastern Elementary School and Old Mission Peninsula School.

“We are pleased that we were able to fill the principal positions with strong internal candidates who know TCAPS and our community,” said Sander Scott, chief of schools for TCAPS. “The selection of these three leaders will ensure that a high level of service and support is available to students, parents and staff at each elementary school.”

Candidates should submit a written letter of interest, including a short statement regarding the qualities and experience the candidate brings to the position, by Friday, May 30, 2014 at 5:00 p.m.

Traverse City Area Public Schools is pleased to announce the Board of Education’s Retirement Recognition Celebration honoring all 2013/14 retiring TCAPS employees (a list of 2013/14 district retirees is attached). The celebration will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at 4:30 p.m. at the Tompkins Boardman Administration Center (412 Webster Street, on the second floor in the Curriculum Rooms). Refreshments will be served. Mr. John Sonnemann, Voice of the Trojans, will serve as Master of Ceremonies. There will also be special entertainment from Sandy Richards’ 5th Grade Cherry Knoll Singers. TCAPS’ students, families, alumni and friends of retirees are encouraged to attend. On Wednesday, May 21, 2014 Traverse City Central High School will host an open house from 5:30 p.m - 7:00 p.m. as part of the Math, Engineering and Science Symposium at the Hagerty Conference Center (715 E. Front St.). Science Math and Technology (SCI-MA-TECH) students will present their independent research projects to a panel of judges from around the community. The event is free and open to the public.

On Friday, May 23, 2014, TCAPS International School at Bertha Vos (ISBV) will dedicate their new hoophouse, “Bertha’s Garden,” at 2:00 p.m. (3723 Shore Dr., Williamsburg). The hoophouse was constructed with help from the SEEDS organization and volunteers, including students, teachers, parents and members of the community. It was named by ISBV students and this year it will grow kale, basil and sunflowers. The dedication ceremony is open to the public.
