News items from Traverse City Area Public Schools

On Thursday, November 20, 2014, TCAPS will hold its fall Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) meeting from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the cafeteria at Traverse Heights Elementary School. The committee includes parents, GSRP teachers, Kindergarten teachers, Head Start teachers, Head Start representatives and Title I preschool teachers. PAC meetings are held twice per year, in fall and spring. Parents in attendance will participate in a home to school connection activity and will have an opportunity to provide feedback about the program. Currently, TCAPS has 13 GSRP classrooms at sites throughout the district. The state-funded program can serve up to 208 students.

The West Middle School Play Production Class will present “Rascals Under the Big Top” on Thursday, Nov. 20th and Friday, Nov. 21st at 4:00 p.m. in the West Middle School Little Theater. Tickets are available at the door and are $3 for adults, students are free.

Traverse Heights Elementary School is collecting non-perishable food items to donate to the Father Fred Foundation. Students will carry the collected donations to Father Fred on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at 9:00 a.m.

From Nov. 24-26, 2014, students and staff at Long Lake Elementary School will be participating in a weeklong focus of kindness. Students will participate in a kickoff assembly on Monday, November, 24th, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., which will feature a video created by students about kindness. On Tuesday, students will have lunch with a new friend and play with them at recess. On Wednesday, students will identify and write down acts of kindness on paper hands at school and the students will see how far those acts of kindness stretch across the school.

More than 50 classrooms across Traverse City Area Public Schools will participate in The Hour of Code during Computer Science Education Week, December 8-14, 2014. The Hour of Code challenges schools to teach computer programming activities to students. Last year, 15 million students tried computer science in one week. This year, The Hour of Code’s goal is to reach 100 million students worldwide.

The Traverse City Central Debate team will host a “Breakfast with Santa” fundraiser on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at the Great Wolf Lodge (3575 North US 31). Two seatings are available—8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Tickets are $25 per person or $250 per table of ten. The event will feature a hearty “up north” breakfast buffet, photos with Santa, special crafts and musical entertainment. In addition, a drawing will be held for a special sleigh ride donated by Hoxie’s Antler Ridge Farm of Acme and a visit with a reindeer. Tickets may be purchased online at www.myticketsnorth.com. “Angel sponsors” may also purchase tickets to donate to needy children in the area to attend.

Traverse City Area Public Schools is pleased to announce that the proceeds received from the 1st Annual UpNorth Media Traverse City Youth Triathlon will be used to purchase and install an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) at Interlochen Community School. A presentation to thank UpNorth Media will take place at the school on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at 9:30 a.m.

On Friday, November 14, 2014, TCAPS will partner with social work students from Ferris State University to host the Fall Family Festival at Traverse Heights Elementary School from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (933 Rose St.). Proceeds will benefit the Father Fred Foundation and its efforts to feed local families in need this Thanksgiving. The event is open to the public. A canned good donation is requested. Activities planned during the event include a science fair, photo booth ($1), kiddie carnival (unlimited games for $5), along with a silent auction (beginning at 7:30 p.m.).

The Traverse City Area Public Schools Music Department is hosting a sock drive between November 21st and December 12th to benefit the Students in Transition Empowerment Program (STEP). New, adult-size socks will be collected at Central High School, West Senior High School, East Middle School and West Middle School. Check with the main office at each school for collection box locations.

Long Lake Elementary School teacher, Melissa Morrice, has been selected to participate in the 2014-15 America Achieves Michigan Educator Voice Fellowship. The America Achieves’ Educator Voice Fellowship elevates the voices of educators to improve policy, practice, and public conversations around higher standards for teaching and learning. The highly-selective fellowship provides a platform for sharing best practices, developing resources and tools, scaling effective teaching and school leadership, and giving educators a voice in local, state, and national discussions about public education.

Athletes from West Senior High School who plan to play sports in college will be recognized on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in the athletic commons. Max Ludka will sign with Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) to play baseball. Katie Placek will sign with Ferris State University to play volleyball. Alex Scott will sign with Grand Valley State University to play golf.

Interlochen Community School, which is an International Baccalaureate* candidate school, is hosting a Pet Food Drive from November 7-24, 2014. Student council representatives have organized the drive as a way of demonstrating their compassion and their commitment to service in our community. Students recognized that many organizations collect food for various pantries during the holidays, but animals are often forgotten. They have decorated boxes and placed them in the entryway at school. All donations are accepted, but dry cat and dog food is preferred. Donations will benefit Cherryland Humane Society and can be dropped off at the school (3113 M-137) Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00. p.m.

Traverse City Area Public Schools provides the opportunity for WWII, Korean Conflict and Vietnam era veterans to apply for a high school diploma. Public Act 181 of 2001 and Public Act 55 of 2014 authorize the board of a Michigan school district to award high school diplomas to WWII, Korean Conflict and Vietnam era veterans. Family members may apply on behalf of a living or deceased veteran. Veterans of the Vietnam era must have been drafted or enlisted between February 28, 1961 and May 7, 1975 to qualify and must apply to the school district where he/she was enrolled during high school. The application requires a copy of the veteran's discharge from military service indicating honorable service between the dates of December 16, 1940 and December 31, 1946, June 27, 1950 and January 31, 1955, or February 28, 1961 and May 7, 1975.
