Ida M. Tompkins was employed by Traverse City Area Public Schools from 1950 - 1994.
Mrs. Tompkins started working for TCAPS at age 17 as a clerk-typist while she was still a student at Traverse City Central High School. During her 44-year career here, she rose to the position of Assistant Superintendent for Business and Finance. Upon her retirement she was honored by a joint resolution of the Michigan Legislature, adopted May 4, 1994 "In grateful recognition of her exceptional contribution to Traverse City Area Public Schools and the community."
She also served as a member of the Board of Education from 1995-1999.
Mrs. Tompkins always strove to fulfill her favorite words by Abraham Lincoln: "I do the very best I know how - the very best I can; and I mean to keep doing so until the end."
