"We believe that by engaging in smaller learning communities each person is empowered as a responsible and capable thinker"

Welcome to Traverse City
West Senior High School
Home of the Titans!

“Student-Led"
Conferences
What are they? When are they?

During the course of this school year, students at West Senior High have had the opportunity to create an electronic portfolio to document their growth. Working in Advisory, students have collected evidence of their learning and development. On Wednesday, May 2, they will share this information in a 15-20 minute student-led conference, which will take place sometime during the usual West Senior High conference time
between 4:30pm - 7:30pm.

Student-led conferences allow students the opportunity to lead a conversation about their progress and goals for high school and beyond. This conference will replace the traditional spring Parent/Teacher conferences. It has been approved at the district level and is now a graduation requirement. Parents/guardians are encouraged to ask questions and engage in conversation after the presentation and clear guidelines will be given to parents/guardians the day of the conference to help facilitate the conversations.

We are excited about this new opportunity for students to share their learning and growth at West Senior High School.

High school students may request the opportunity to “test out” of any high school class they select. A student who successfully tests out of a course will receive credit toward graduation for the course.
The option to test out will be offered at TC West Senior High on Thursday, May 10, 2012 - 7:00-9:00 p.m. and also on Saturday, May 12, 2011 - 9:00-11:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Applications will be available in the counseling office.
Deadline to return these forms to your counselors will be Monday, April 23, 2012.

Traverse City West Senior High School is a comprehensive school home to 1,748 students, grades 9 -12.  A caring staff is committed to creating a learning community in which all members will be: treated with dignity, honesty, respect, and trust, encouraged to be positive contributors, provided multiple opportunities and strategies to be successful, and where quality work will be an expectation. Excellent opportunities are provided in mathematics, social studies, language arts, and science, as well as fine arts, foreign language, and physical education. Additionally, our music and sports programs are outstanding and competitive.

Currently, we offer over 132 different classes including 17 Advanced Placement classes, four vocational programs on-site, dual enrollment with Northwestern Michigan College. Articulation agreements with Davenport and Ferris State Universities.  College level Linear Equations and Calculus III on-site partnership with Ferris State University and extensive on-line learning offerings.  Student services are offered through the center-based special education program, gifted and talented program, dual enrollment, academic assistance (provides academic support within the classrooms and tutoring opportunities for individuals at risk of failure), and the Career Tech Center.

We have also created three small learning communitites within the larger West structure in which all students have been placed into one of the three neighborhoods, Athens, Olympia, or Sparta.  Students now have even more opportunities for personal relationships with staff mentors and an individualized high school experience within each neighborhood.  With the addition of our new advisory structure within each neighborhood, all students now have the opportunity, through a systemic college and career planning curriculum, to develop an electronic portfolio to be exhibited through student-led conferences.

We are very proud of the recognition Traverse City West Senior High School received as one of the nations best high schools by the Washington Post, for our outstanding Advanced Placement enrollment and scores, our highly competitive athletic programs, our professional quality music and theatre productions, and our award winning fine arts department.  Traverse City West Senior High is a first class school that honors the contributions of all of its students and staff and encourages excellence in a respectful, caring learning community.

The mission of Traverse City West Senior High School is to educate our students to be knowledgeable, responsible, and productive citizens in a safe learning community that respects and celebrates diversity, creativity, and excellence.
