TCAPS Food & Nutrition Services:           "Where Local is our Focal"

Welcome to the Food & Nutrition Services department of the Traverse City Area Public Schools District.

Our mission, as an extension of the educational programs of the school district, is dedicated to the improvement of the health of students by providing flavorful and nutritious meals at an affordable cost, to provide service to the school, to enhance the educational environment, and have a positive impact on the community.

Local Food Partners

The TCAPS Food & Nutrition department is proud to be working with local food vendors this year.  We would like to recognize these area businesses and look forward to future partnerships.

Cultivate Michigan

We are participating in the "Cultivate Michigan" program, an effort to bring more local foods to institutions.  Our goal is to purchase 20% of our food products from the state of Michigan by 2020.  We are currently partnering with Cherry Capital Foods, Gordon Food Service, and individual growers to achieve this goal.

Gordon Food Service also has a program focusing on local food purchases, called "Near Buy".  To see a listing of Michigan produced foods and products purchased by TCAPS, click: Near Buy 1

Free & Reduced Lunch Application

Application - Now Available Online
The current economic climate in the State of Michigan and across the country has raised uncertainties for families. Job losses, buy-outs, and rising costs of living are all having a greater impact on families. Families who were previously managing sufficiently, may now be finding it more challenging financially to make ends meet. If you find yourself in this situation, your student(s) may be eligible to receive reduced or free meals (including breakfast and lunch) at school.

Applications are available at all schools, and are sent home with students during the first week of school. To apply online, click on the link "Apply for Free or Reduced Lunch" on the left-hand side of this page or visit and follow the instructions for Traverse City Area Public Schools.

If you submit the application online, you do not have to fill out and submit a paper application. Online applications may allow your application to be processed. Whether you apply online or by paper application, once the application is processed a letter will be mailed to your home with the status of the application within (10) business days. Prompt return of the completed application is requested so that we can better serve you. If you have questions regarding the free and reduced meal application process, please contact the TCAPS Food & Nutrtion Services Department at (231) 933-1910.
