Service-Learning
Service-learning connects meaningful community service with academic learning, personal growth, and civic responsibility. Students are able to see beyond the classroom and into the community, where they learn by addressing community needs and solving real-life problems. Students benefit as they learn to understand more about the world around them, comprehend academic content and apply their knowledge in contributing to their community's well being.

Current Service-Learning Projects Include (but not limited to):
School Community Gardens
With major support from Rotary Charities, a School Community Garden was planned and developed at Traverse Heights Elementary School. Teachers incorporated their science, math, social studies, and language arts curriculum into the development of the garden. The garden is completely self-sustainable as students sell their produce to reinvest in seeds and supplies for the following year.
Project Greenager
Project Greenager is a service-learning project in the 8th grade at West Middle School. Students learn about environmental stewardship for an entire semester in their math and science classes. The project climaxes with an entire day of service from over 400 students for many organizations like Inland Seas, National Park Service, National Lakeshore, TART Trails, Leland Clean Water, GT Conservancy and more.Learn more
Heroes in our Community Project
Students work together to learn about civic responsibility, taking social action, and making a difference in the Traverse City community. Classes work with local organizations, teachers develop lesson plans and service projects to help suport local people and local organizations. Guest readers and speakers partner with the schools to help educate, motivate, and assist students with their projects.
Eastern Elementary School's Heroes Project challenges students to identify causes they care about, and to donate their time as teams to help support those causes, while teachers incorporate the projects into every day learning. Eastern partnered with the United Way of Northwest Michigan and TCAPS to help others in our community, region, nation, and around the world. Last year, students learned and supported the elderly, Troops and Veterans, animals, the environment, homelessness, and babies and children. Over $10,000 was raised to support these causes.
