| March 2, 2012 District Notes MEAP UPDATE FOR PARENTS – TCAPS IS TAKING ACTION
We want to share an update with parents regarding district MEAP results and follow-up steps TCAPS is taking. Throughout March, every elementary school will hold a parent meeting to share school MEAP results and discuss big changes in the way MEAP results are now reported.
This year, the Michigan Department of Education raised the MEAP cut scores (or cut-off scores). Cut scores separate test takers into categories such as advanced, proficient, partially proficient, and not proficient. Throughout the entire state of Michigan, the new cut scores dramatically changed the student, school, and district performance levels on the MEAP test.
We want parents and students to understand the MEAP is a one-time snapshot of a student’s performance at a single point and time. TCAPS uses multiple assessment measures throughout the school year, such as Developmental Reading Assessments (K-5), ACT Explore (Grades 7-9), PLAN (Grade 10) and local unit assessments (CAAP) to gain an overall picture of your child’s academic performance. This spring, a nationally normed assessment will also be administered in grades 2-6.
Each student’s academic growth is similar to his or her growth in other areas of their development. A lower score does not mean that a child isn’t gaining academic skills, nor does a lower proficiency level indicate that a child is falling behind. If a child does not score at or above the proficient level on any of the assessments, this may be an indication that, on the day of the test, the child had not yet mastered the skills or vocabulary for his or her grade level.
We are actively analyzing the MEAP results and other student performance information. School improvement teams are looking at their students’ scores and focusing on instructional adjustments and supports where students are not meeting common core level expectations. Our greatest area of concern is elementary math where results were very inconsistent from school to school. We are examining all aspects of our math instruction. Professional development in-services are being conducted with a focus on instructional methods and content. TCAPS is also ensuring that our curriculum will be aligned with the Michigan Core Standards.
We are keeping our focus on the ultimate goal that every one of our students will be career or college ready when they graduate from high school. Starting in the sixth grade, our students can now begin to earn high school credits.

TCAPS Sponsorship Programs
TCAPS is offering local businesses and non-profit organizations a perfect way to capture the attention of school audiences while helping to boost funding for education. New, for the 2011-2012 school year, sponsorship opportunities will be available at Thirlby Field stadium, TCAPS' middle schools and high schools, and the Lars Hockstad Auditorium. Sponsorship program options include signage, electronic school newsletters, TCAPS’ Web site, and TV/98 venues for local businesses and non-profit organizations to share their messages in support of education.
TCAPS is recognized for our excellence in the quality and variety of outstanding programs and extracurricular offerings that we offer for our students. We believe these important learning experiences help inspire and engage students to find their passion and reach their potential.
Our school district is known as an active partner in the community. Now we need our community’s support more than ever to sustain our school district’s unwavering commitment to students. TCAPS is seeking sponsorship support to help maintain athletic program opportunities for students and to support essential communications with our students, families, and the community.
TCAPS wants to maintain beneficial offerings for students and families in two key areas for the coming school year that are in great need of funding support:
- Athletic and extracurricular opportunities for elementary, middle, and high school students through the TCAPS Learning Enrichment and Athletic Program (LEAP)
- School newsletters for parents that will now be published electronically
Due to the uncertainty Michigan schools are facing with regard to State funding cuts for education, TCAPS has undergone significant budget reductions over the past several years and anticipates the need for continued budget reductions in the future. Your 2011-2012 sponsorship will go directly to support costs for elementary and middle school athletic programming and school-to-home newsletter communications.
We thank you for considering TCAPS' sponsorship opportunities for your business or non-profit organization.

Food & Nutrition Menus News
The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 requires some changes to the offerings at School Breakfast and Lunch. The new requirements will be ready-to-go for the Fall 2012 school year. In an effort to get a jump start, the Food & Nutrition Services Department would like to announce a change to the current elementary menus. We will be offering more selections on the salad and food bars rather than having an alternate offering each day. A deli sandwich selection will be available everyday. Turkey, ham, cheese, hummus, or peanut butter and bread or sub rolls will be offered, with at least one vegetarian protein option available daily. If you have questions, please call your school's kitchen leader.
