TCAPS Hosts Home Grown Institute for Teachers During the summer break, TCAPS hosted a special weeklong writers’ workshop to help teachers hone skills and strategies for teaching writing and inspiring students to write more. Over one hundred teachers participated in the Home Grown Institute where they learned to implement Lucy Calkins’ Units of Study in TCAPS’ K-5 classrooms. The teachers spent half of each day working directly with the Units of Study and the other half of the day participating as a student in a Writers' Workshop. The purpose of the Institute was to provide teachers proven methods of improving student achievement in writing.
