Smaller Learning Communities

Traverse City Area Public Schools is pleased to share its first year progress report with the community regarding systemic changes taking place at TCAPS high schools.

TCAPS’ Smaller Learning Communities (SLC’s) are fueling innovative approaches and structures to provide personalized learning environments for every student throughout his/her high school experience.

The purpose and outcomes for the Smaller Learning Communities (SLC’s) are to improve student achievement, ensure successful graduation for all students, and further promote successful transitions for students into post-secondary education.

This E-News update includes examples of:

• What Smaller Learning Communities look like.
• What the advantages are of SLC’s.
• Strategies in action to create school structures and supports for SLC’s.
• Glimpses into ways staff, students, parents, schools, and our communities are working together to create SLC’s and to implement new approaches improve student achievement and success following graduation for all.

The big ideas guiding these broad and systemic changes are research-based and affirm the powerful and positive results gained by schools that support:

• Transitions throughout students’ high school journey.
  
  
• Student achievement through more personalized and rigorous learning environments.
  
  
• Personal growth, relationships, and connections among students and staff to promote relevant and engaging learning experience.
