| May Library UpdateWhat an absolutely gorgeous day! I don't have a window in my office, but I have made several trips to the mailbox just to soak up the sun. After all, you never know when something important may come via the Postal Service, right???
If you have preteens or teens in your household, we invite you to bring them to PCL this Thursday at 6:30 p.m. After a pizza dinner on the library, staff members Carol and Becky will be showing them how to create no-bake treats from scratch. Ingredients will be provided, but kids will need to bring a microwave safe bowl, fork and spoon, measuring cup and something to tote their sweets home in. There is no charge, but call to let us know that your young person is coming so that we know how many to plan on!
Celebrate World Migratory Bird Day with us this Saturday, May 11 at 10 a.m. Rebecca Lessard of Wings of Wonder will be joining us with her majestic birds of prey. Kids may stay after to craft a simple Cheerio bird treat to take home and hang for their feathered friends.
Our Large Print Collection of bestseller books has been updated thanks to a generous grant from the Old Mission Women's Club! Older books were donated to the Traverse City Senior Center and close to $800 of new titles now fill our Large Print shelves. We have also purchased, thanks to the grant, two models of page magnifiers that are available for loan free of charge. These special edition books are "easy on the eyes" unabridged full-text volumes and are great especially at night. I feel like I am whipping through the pages as well since the text is so much larger than normal! We also have talking books available, both on CD through our own collection and as downloadables through the Traverse Area District Library. The District Library also participates in the Federally funded Talking Book Library for qualified people with physical and visual handicaps. Just ask and we will help find what is right for you!
Our book club for elementary school-aged boys, Guys Read, Too meets Monday, May 13 at 4:15 p.m. They invite you to join them for discussion and fun activities!!! They meet every other month alternating with our Mother Daughter Book Club , The Chapter Chicks, which meets at 6 p.m.. Not to neglect our adults, Pageturners meets every month on the third Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. Call for more information! We LOVE newcomers! And of course, don't forget Story Stew, our preschool story hour on the first and third Thursdays of the month at 9:30 a.m.
Finally, I want to thank the Old Mission PTO for the lovely new greenhouse that is being erected while I type! Thanks also to the Burnside Brothers - Old Mission dad and uncle - for assembling the frame from foreign language instructions! We also thank Jacquie Harding's Cub Scouts and Master Gardener Dale Wright for taking care of our vegetable garden beds! Summer will be blooming here shortly at the library!
Get outside! I am having dinner on my deck tonight no matter what the weather is like when the clock strikes 6! See you soon in the library!

| April Public Library UpdateDisappointed that you missed the PCL Friends meeting last week??? You have a second chance! Due to the snow day called by TCAPS last week, the Friends meeting was rescheduled for this Wednesday at 1 p.m. Join us for spring treats, camaraderie and to plan summer fundraisers that help support the library. Newcomers are welcome!
Threads, our fiber arts group, meets today at 2 p.m. Feel free to bring along a project and work on it among friends. I am envious of what these crafters can do! I might have to get a free lesson some time!
Thursday is a busy day for patrons of all ages at the library! Story Stew for preschoolers happens at 9:30. The theme is April Showers and we offer parents and grandparents who are here with their kids for the program a free cup of coffee at our self-service coffee bar! That evening, adults get together for Pageturners to discuss the great book, Maine by Courtney Sullivan.
Finally, you can nourish not only your mind here at Peninsula Community Library, but your body as well by attending a yoga session, Saturday at 9 a.m. Gentle instructor Tina Livingston gears this hour long session toward people of all abilities. We will be offering this on the first and third Saturdays of the month at 9 a.m. for as long as there is enough interest. We will be asking for a $5 donation toward the cost, but this Saturday is on the library!
Stay dry, enjoy a walk with your umbrella and know that April showers do indeed bring May flowers - and, hopefully, cherry blossoms!
Vicki |
| April Library NewsShake off winter by stretching your muscles and getting ready for the activities of summer! Bring a mat or a towel and join us this Saturday at 9 a.m. Tina Livingston is a gentle instructor, good with people of all abilities. No charge!
(Notice update below)
*Due to a mix-up with schedules, Yoga WILL NOT happen at the library this Saturday! We will have a regular schedule beginning in May - first and third Saturdays at 9 a.m. May 4 and 18 are on PCL. Thereafter, we will ask for a $5 donation! Call me if you have any questions!
We are thinking of spring in other ways, too! Thanks to PTO, PCL is getting a greenhouse. If you are interested in helping in our gardens and/or with our vegetable table beds this summer, give me a call! It will be summer before we know it.
I am also looking for a person who might know how to set up our telescope. It was knocked over recently and while it was not damaged, it does need some adjusting and some parts realigned. I tried to do it myself, however the view is inverted and while sometimes the world does seem upside down, it is not the way I prefer to see it! If you can help, let me know.
Thanks to all of you have volunteered for our Bayshore Marathon aid station over Memorial Day weekend. I still need a few more volunteers for the Saturday, May 25th event. We have great fun passing out water and Gatorade and cheering the runners on. Drop me an email if you will join us! Kids are welcome with an adult to supervise them. It takes over 30 people to do an aid station. I currently have 22 volunteers.
Enjoy the sunshine -
Vicki
Stay dry!

| February UpdatesI was overwhelmed by how many of you called or stopped by to welcome me back after my European trip! How kind all of you are and how very fortunate I am to have so many caring friends! I am very grateful to my wonderful staff who kept things running smoothly in my absence. Together, staff and patrons, we make for a great community!
On Wednesday evening, February 13, Jeff Haas and the Building Bridges with Music Quintet will perform at the Old Mission Peninsula School gymnasium at 7 pm. This family friendly, all-ages performance is hosted by the Peninsula Community Library as part of the Old Mission Community Reads program. During the month of February, the Old Mission community was invited to read the featured book, The Hundred Dresses, by Eleanor Estes. Written in 1944, it is a timeless tale of bullying, regret and forgiveness. The performance on Wednesday evening will include original live music by Haas and commentary from members of the quintet about the connections between The Hundred Dresses and the Building Bridges' mission of promoting tolerance, respect and peace. Whether or not you read the book, you are invited, young or old, to come hear this great program! There is, of course, no charge! Many, many thanks to the OMPS PTO for providing refreshments for the evening, especially Jen Palamara who baked dress shaped cookies! Jen, you are amazing!
In relation to the month long event, we are also collecting new children's clothes to donate to the Father Fred Foundation. Leave your donations in the baskets in the hall outside the library. If you would rather, there is a jar for monetary donations which will be donated to the Women's Resource Center.
Guess you had a little bit of snow while I was floating around in the Aegean Sea and climbing through ancient ruins in the Mediterranean! We were closed what must be a record 5 days while I was gone and had to cancel numerous programs due to severe weather. Many of you have asked if the Shipwreck program with diver Ross Richardson will be rescheduled and the answer is yes. As soon as I have a date I will let you know! The tea towel embroidery lesson, a Threads Extra program, has been rescheduled to Friday February 22 at 9:30 a.m. If you didn't sign up the first time, here is your chance There is no fee, but call to let us know you are coming!
A special craft session for teens and pre-teens happens on Valentine's Day, February 14 at 6:30. Learn to make anything and everything you can imagine out of duct tape. Of course, what would the day be out sweet treats?! Call to reserve a spot for your child!
Crafts abound at PCL! On Monday, February 18 at 2 p.m., you are invited to join our Threads group and craft a ribbon wreath. All supplies are provided, but please RSVP so we know how many to plan for.
Be sure to reserve Monday, March 11 for our annual Books at the Boathouse Fundraiser. The event includes dinner, wine and a keynote presentation by Pulitzer prize winning journalist Bryan Gruley. Bryan is also the author of a popular series of crime novels set in Michigan. Tickets, $50 per person, will be available next week at the library. Enjoy a wonderful evening and support your township library! We are also looking for sponsors to make donations to cover the costs involved in putting on this event. If you are interested in helping out in this way, please call me.
Is winter almost over? I fear not! It is certainly a winter white fairy land out there. Enjoy!

The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes, is the story of a young girl who wears the same dress to school every day but tells everyone that she has 100 dresses in her closet. A timeless tale of bullying, regret and forgiveness, it is as poignant today as it was when published in 1944. Copies of the book are available in the library for sale & loan. While it is a children’s book, it is our hope that adults will participate as well to share their own stories as both the victim & the intimidator. Details are available in the library or on the attached flyer! Note that there will be a special program in the gym, Wednesday, February 13 at 7 pm when Jeff Haas joins us to use music to launch a discussion on bullying, prejudice and acceptance. The community is invited to participate in all aspects of the program!

| January UpdatesNow that the holidays are over, the decorations are down (okay, well, mine are still up!) and we are used to writing 2013 instead of 2012 (okay, well, I am still occasionally writing 2012), and it is not quite time to worry about taxes (okay, well, I did just run my staff's W-2's whether they want them or not), I invite you to attend one of our great library programs!
Michigan's Attorney General sponsors an informative session here this Thursday at 10 a.m. as a part of his Senior Brigade series for retirees - but others are welcome as well. Thursday's session is on AVOIDING IDENTITY FRAUD and what to do should it happen to you. There is no fee and I would love a big crowd for this one since the presenter is coming from downstate. Hope you can attend!
Threads Extra - a seasonal offshoot of our Fiber Arts group, holds a special session Friday, January 11 at 9:30 a.m. when Nikki Lennox teaches everyone to make a Loopy Scarf. Bring a pair of knitting needles - the fatter the better - and 2-3 skeins of different colors and textures of yarn. No fee, but call 223-7700 to let us know you are coming!
The next time you are in the library, pick up a reading log for our HOT READS FOR COLD NIGHTS winter reading program for adults. All you have to do is read six books (checked out from PCL, of course) between January 1 and the end of winter. Turn your completed log in at the library to receive a gift certificate for a really great cup of hot chocolate at the Old Mission General Store! It is a warm rich dessert in a cup!
Of course, we have all of our regular programming as well! Story Stew for little ones meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month at 9:30 a.m. Reading clubs abound at PCL. Pageturners for adults meets on the third Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. Guys Read Too for boys meets on the second Monday of the month at 4:15 ((January 14 this month) and alternates months with Chapter Chicks, our Mother Daughter Book Club which meets February 11 at 6:30 p.m. Threads is a gathering of stitchers and crafters who meet on the third Monday of the month at 2 p.m. to work on individual projects in the company of others. Nuestros Amigos, our story hour for families, is offered in Spanish on the third Saturday of the month at 10 a.m. Also note that our English as a Second Language classes with Kristine Dietrich resume January 19. There is no fee and no need to register, so if you know of anyone in need of English lessons, please let them know!
If you are looking for an enjoyable way to support the Friends of the Library, you can enjoy breakfast or lunch at the Campus Plaza Omelette Shoppe on January 21. Hours are 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. 15% of your purchase comes back to the PCL Friends for their support of library programs and materials. There is no school that day, so make it TAKE YOUR CHILD OUT TO BREAKFAST OR LUNCH DAY and support your community library! Let's pack the restaurant full with Old Mission people. You do need to present the flyer to your server and I have attached a copy for you to print. It will print two, so pass one on to a neighbor or friend. We also have them in the library if you would rather pick one up.
I hear that it is a beautiful day out there. In my office without windows, I am never sure. However, I do enjoy the light that each of you brings in whenever you come to the library. Hope to see you soon!

| Turkey MattersPeople don't want to leave the library! A little girl just skipped out after her father. He had told her that he had to leave to get a sibling some where and she announced that she was not going. She was staying right here in the library. Of course, when he actually went out the door, she followed after him. Another father is at this moment trying to talk his son into going home for dinner with little success. What a beautiful thing - not to want to leave a library!!!
A very special program is coming to PCL in 2013 - a Junior Master Gardening Class for 3-5th graders. Students will learn about plants, soil, water, ecology, insects, landscaping and careers. Sessions will be after school from 4-5 p.m. on Thursdays in January, February and the beginning of March. Course fee is $25 and will cover 4-H membership, snacks and supplies. Sessions will be led by Certified Master Gardener Karen McClatchey, who is also a retired OMPS teacher. Interested parents and kids are invited to the library for an informational meeting during last recess at 3:20 p.m. on Tuesday, November 27. This is sure to be a great course of discovery and the only one of its kind offered this winter in the county. Call the library with any questions!
Our sincere condolences to the family of former PCL Trustee Fred Schaafsma. Fred lost his battle with a brain tumor last Thursday. He was an active member of the community, relentlessly supportive of the library. Fred worked with me throughout the renovations to our space in Old Mission Peninsula School back in 2005-2006. Humorous story - Fred ran for the Board position because his sister-in-law had promised him that the position would be as easy as sitting around with coffee and cookies. With a major project, it was anything but. He and I spent the next year and a half running like mad and I don't remember either of us ever sitting down to coffee and cookies. I was as new a Director as he was a new Trustee! He will be missed. In his memory, we have ordered a new subscription to the popular magazine, Cycle World. Fred was an avid cyclist.
Many thanks to patron Gloria McClay, who has donated a brand new scanner to the library for patron use. Thank you Gloria! We have the best patrons here at PCL!
If you are a homecrafter, take note that Threads, our Fiber Arts group, meets at 2 p.m. in the library on the third Monday of the month. Bring a project along and work on it among friends. These ladies (well, men are welcome, too!) have a great time!
On behalf of the Staff and Board at PCL, I wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving. Please note that the library will be closed Thursday, Thanksgiving Day as well as Black Friday. We will be open normal hours 9-1 on Saturday.
Don't eat too much turkey - you have to save room for the pie!

Mark Mullinax, genealogist and local history specialist with the Brighton District Library gives us starting points and tips Thursday evening here at PCL at 7 p.m. Both sets of my grandparents immigrated to the United States as children and teenagers, three through Ellis Island and one through Canada's port of entry in Halifax. Also that night is Pageturners, our book club for grown-ups. The book of discussion is When We Were Strangers by Pamela Schoenewaldt. Newcomers are always welcome!
A Spanish Movie Afternoon is being offered Saturday, November 17, after hours at 1 p.m. The movie is Madagascar 3 and pizza will be available as well. Note that English as a Second Language classes also start that day at 10 a.m. There is no charge for these classes and no need to register. If you know of anyone who would benefit, please pass the word on! The instructor is Kristine Dietrich, a gifted ESL teacher.
You still have time to get out and vote! Polls are open until 8 p.m. Make your opinions count!
Don't forget that the library is a great place to hang out!

| PCL November UpdateWhat a phenomenal Halloween event we held here on Saturday night, a PCL and OMPS PTO collaboration! At least 150 children and their grownups attended, some from other parts of town and many dressed in costume. We had apple and doughnut bobbing, a haunted maze in one end and out the other of the music room, a craft, treats to eat, pumpkin carving and shenanigans in the gym. The culmination of the evening was a pumpkin lit walk through the night woods to the amphitheater where stories were told by lantern light. Even the moon managed to peek out through the trees from behind the clouds at just the right moment, as if on command! The walk was so magical that an hour and a half after everyone had gone home, the adult Palameras and Shurlys were still walking the trail. At serious risk of leaving someone out, I want to thank everyone who helped make Haunted Night such a success, especially PTO president and his wife Joe and Jen Palamera, Jill Varner for decorating the exterior and hall, Patricia Henkel and Alycia Gerber for edible treats, Karen Robens for helping with craft prep one day spontaneously when she just happened to be in the library, Mr. Randy for coming in on a Saturday night to help clean up and my PCL staff for planning, preparing, stripping their homes of seasonal decorations for the maze as well as for working the evening. Oh and I cannot forget staff member Becky's husband Rich Gagnon and my own husband Bob Shurly for pitching in as well! I know that I have missed people, but please know that I am most grateful for anything and everything anyone did to make the event such a memorable evening for community families. Joe was in this morning and we are already planning on next year! Happy, Happy Halloween!
A great multi-generational program is planned for this Saturday at 10 a.m. when conservationist Kay Charter joins us to discuss migrating birds and their habitats. Kay was the driving force behind the founding of Saving Birds Thru Habitat and is the author of the book, For the Love of Birds. You may remember Kay's column from the Record-Eagle, which ran regularly. Thanks to Fred Zwemer, participants will have the opportunity following the program to construct a beautiful wooden platform bird feeder. The project and program are suitable for patrons of all ages and Kay will gear her talk toward children as well as adults. However, the kids will need an adult to help them. There is no charge, but please call to let us know if you are building the feeder.
Two final notes: Story Stew, our preschool story hour happens this Thursday at 9:30 a.m. when we go Nutty for Squirrels in the library! Our popular iPad class happens again this Friday from 9:30-noon. Join Cheri Breadon who is comfortable with iAnything!
PCL is open regular hours 9-5:30 on Halloween. Come on in and check out a scary movie (Cathy likes Stephen King's The Shining or there is my favorite - Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes), the classic music of Chopin's "Funeral March" or any one of hundreds of spine-chilling mysteries. We might even have a piece of candy or two to put in your sack because the library is all treats and no tricks!
Thought you might enjoy the attached photo of Joe Palamera's new method of speed cleaning the pulp from a pumpkin. That is Joe with his drill and a paint-blending drill attachment and 200 - yes, 200 - pumpkins! I would think that a shower to "de-pulp" himself was probably in order when Joe finally got home!
See you soon -
Vicki

| October Library NewsWas that snow I saw earlier or sleet??? A young patron just commented that, while he had to wear his winter coat today, when it is wrapped around him, he "feels like summer." Now that is a positive attitude!
Artist Mariah Manning will be leading a very special art program here at the library October 20 at 10 a.m. when children in grades K-2 are invited to explore the basics of the color wheel by creating a masterpiece that uses complimentary colors. Not to leave your older kids out, a second workshop will be offered November 10 at 10 a.m. for 3rd -5th graders, who will create a piece showcasing the different styles of artists Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. There is no fee for either program, but call to let us know that you are coming. Mariah is a gifted artist who has been creating commissioned work since 1993. She currently shows work at Cook's House and 2Lads Winery. She was also the featured artist in Morsel's this year for the Downtown ArtWalk. As the mother of two, she is continually inspired by her children's beauty and raw emotion. You may check out her website at www.mariahmanning.com.
The Friends of Peninsula Community Library meet next week, Wednesday, October 17 at 1 p.m. Come join them for Halloween treats and to help spend funds from summer fundraisers!
iPad workshops will be offered November 2 and December 7 at 9:30 a.m. Call us so we know how many people to plan for. Be sure to bring your iDevice with you. Cheri Breadon will be the presenter and she, like Kathleen Maxwell, is a self-taught wonder with iAnything (my word)!
TCAPS invites the community to a meeting tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. here in the school library to share information on their bond proposal. You are invited to attend.
A smile from a brand new patron about our small rural library: "This is the most amazing place on the face of the earth." I think so, too!!! Hope to see all of you in here soon!

| Mid October NewsWe still have openings in Mariah Manning's art class for Kindergarten through second grade kids who are interested in using primary colors to create a masterpiece. The class meets at 10 a.m. and your child will leave with a frame-able piece. Children a little bit older are welcome, too!

Election Day is coming up fast. League of Women's Voters guides are here - stop in and pick one up. We also have sample ballots for each of the two districts in the township that you may look over in the library. Make your opinions count!
Cheri Breadon will be offering an iPad workshop Friday November 2 at 9:30 a.m. She knows her way around any iDevice so call to register and bring yours along. A weather app that both Carol and I had downloaded, warned us to seek higher ground earlier in the month when the Brown Bridge dam was breached. Could have been useful, except that we are already on pretty high ground here at the library! Cheri can point you to these kind of apps and more, as well as help with setup and other questions.

Searches may be done by grade and author if you are looking for something specific. Since TumbleBooks is available directly through Peninsula Community Library’s website, everyone can get to it – at school OR at home! The Library is such a busy place right now. Students and staff are in and out to select books, hear stories, and do research.
I am glad to see everyone so excited about reading. Students visit the library once a week with their class to hear a story and check out books. Those books are due the following week on their library day. Our youngest students are learning how to use the library and how to take good care of the books they take home.
I am always looking for parents who are willing to come in every week and help out. It is nice for students to see other adults helping out at school and we appreciate the extra hands on the job. I will also need volunteers for the Scholastic Book Fair during the week of November 28th through December 2nd. If you are interested in being a library volunteer, please give me a call at 933-7462.
Come in and say hello! You are always welcome.
